Deep housekeeping

I found these old pages from when I worked at Sun Publications 7 years ago. The pictures are all by Todd Heisler who has an amazing sense of lighting and detail. Because of he gave me such strong photos, I feel like these pages designed themselves.

Robin Williams stars in 'World's Greatest Dad'

Cleaning house

Here is an older page from the night President Obama won. I worked with Toni Sciacqua, the Daily Breeze managing editor at the time, in advance on some different ways to present the page for the Daily Breeze and the Press-Telegram. We wanted something dramatic, which is where the red border comes from. For the Breeze's page, the red border went around the whole page.

Health and entertainment

I let loose with some color while helping out the San Gabriel papers but my pretty layout was spoiled by leeches. Don't look too close to the bottom.

Find me elsewhere

For a few pages that I did while I worked at Sun Publications, look at Sid Hastings' Web site. Sid was my photo editor and worked with me and the photographer on a page that won a Society for News Design award. The page, with the headline "Little Things Mean a Lot," features pictures of a car show in downtown Plainfield, IL and were shot by Pulitzer Prize winner Todd Heisler.

A weekend of work

Here are images from my first week working on the consolidated features desk at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Some of the other LANG papers picked up the centerpieces - the summer movie preview pages show how the package had to be tweaked for two of the other papers.

A1 designs

Here's a couple of A1 pages from 2008.

Preparing for disaster

I worked on this page with one of the reporters and our graphic designer, who created the bottom portion. We often get request for reprints and have published the page several times after wildfires, earthquakes and floods.

Inauguration Day

On Inauguration day, the Daily Breeze and Press-Telegram published a special section in the middle of the afternoon to commemorate the event. I worked with my Managing Editor, Toni Sciacqua, to choose photos for the doubletruck.
